Career Counseling & Assessments

Many alumni find themselves in the position of changing careers or jobs or continuing their education. Completing self-assessments of your interests, skills, personality and values is often a good starting point to help you with "recareering" issues. Career Services offers two assessments for alumni at a reasonable rate. The price of each assessment includes a follow-up appointment with a career counselor. Other assessments are available on the Internet at no charge. Follow the links below to learn more and call Career Services if you have any questions.

Strong Interest Inventory
The 1994 version of the Strong Interest Inventory (SII) ® is available on the internet and takes about 30 minutes to complete. This 291-item inventory matches your interests with the interests of people who have been in career fields at least three years and are satisfied with their work.
You'll spend 30 minutes on the computer taking the inventory and then schedule a follow-up appointment with a qualified career counselor to talk with you about your results.

Myers-Briggs Type Indicator
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI) is a pencil and paper personality inventory that is very compatible with the Strong Interest Inventory®. Learn how your preferences fit into different work environments. Allow about 30 minutes to complete this assessment. A qualified Career Counselor will interpret your results along with the Strong® results.

Values Inventory Worksheet

WORK AND LIFESTYLE VALUES
In addition to considering interests, skills, and personality, you should consider your values when choosing a career. Work values are characteristics about jobs and work environments such as salary, amount of independence, required hours, etc.
Lifestyle values characterize what preferences people desire for their futures such as living in a particular geographic locale, maintaining family responsibilities, spending time in recreation, etc. People tend to feel most satisfied when their work satisfies their values. Print and complete the linked checklists to help prioritize YOUR values. There are no right or wrong answers.
As you research potential careers, consider whether or not they fit your values.
