Retail Walgreen proffers an old-fashioned tonic for fiscal fitness: quality over quantity and homespun growth rather than growth through acquisition. It works. Despite having fewer stores than its closest rival CVS, Walgreen is #1 sales. The company has about 4,000 Walgreens stores in 43 states and Puerto Rico. Prescription drugs account for almost 60% of sales; the rest comes from general merchandise, over-the-counter medications, cosmetics, and groceries. Walgreen builds rather than buys stores, so it can pick prime, high-traffic locations. For added convenience, more than two-thirds of its stores offer drive-through pharmacies, and almost all offer one-hour photo processing.
