Present Job Title:
Assistant Controller

Brief description of my job responsibilities, e.g. a typical week in my job:
Hospital administration and departmental management liaison. Responsible for compilation and analysis of financial and statistical results daily, monthly and annually with a focus on the month end closing process. Work closely with departmental managers and directors concerning budget variances, department performance variances, and productivity/FTE (Full time equivalent) analysis. Responsible for external reporting unique to healthcare. Other responsibilities include internal audits that often result in developing new policies and procedures or chargemaster reviews.

Suggestions I would give to undergraduate students with regard to courses, internships, and other means of preparation for my career field:
Take as many courses as your time and money can afford. Internship experience opened the door to many job interviews and future job opportunties.

My career path in getting to this position:
Hired out of college (on campus interview) by PricewaterhouseCoopers Healthcare Consulting practice. When the office closed in Nashville I was recruited by a healthcare organization to move back home to Memphis. Healthcare is a unique industry that has room for all types of backgrounds: marketing, finance, accounting, nursing, management, etc.

Other advice for students interested in gaining entry into and pursuing a career in this field:
Check into hospitals in your area or healthcare consulting firms. It is a wonderful field to get into right out of college. I am 26 years old and 90% of the people I work with are over 40. Plenty of room for opportunity! You can contact me or visit the organization where I am a volunteer leader, www.hfma.org to learn more about the healthcare finance industry.
