Brief description of my job responsibilities, e.g. a typical week in my job:
I am a comprehensive financial planner with a practice in Franklin, TN. My job
involves a great deal of financial knowledge, but a tremendous more amount of
marketing and sales skills in establishing a new practice. I typically work
apr. 65 to 75 hours per week, with a majority of that time in growing my
practice. (This is a standard work week in this field for your first 3 or 4
years)
Suggestions I would give to undergraduate students with regard to courses,
internships, and other means of preparation for my career field:
Learn marketing and sales skill sets early on-even through an internship over
the summmer. Take as much finance as possible, even MBA classes. Take
public speaking and communication courses if you feel that you are weak in that
area. Never stop learning; if you stop learning, you stop growing. If you
stop growing, you are dying.
My career path in getting to this position:
I interned with several unrelated companies during my collegiate years, but went
directly into financial planning after graduation.
Other advice for students interested in gaining entry into and pursuing a career
in this field:
You must be determined; you will face tremendous amounts of rejection both
trying to hire onto a brokerage house, etc. and in dealing with potential
clients. Do as much research upfront as possible; knowing everything you can
about the career and your potential employer can mean everything.
