Present Job Title:
Manager - Purchasing/Stores & Traffic
Brief description of my job responsibilities, e.g. a typical week in my job:
Manage 2 salaried buyers, 15 hourly employees, 1 salaried supervisor. Procure
goods and services for internal customers by using the competitive bidding
process. Responsible for storeroom inventories and increasing working capital
thru consignment, jit, e-procurement.
Suggestions I would give to undergraduate students with regard to courses,
internships, and other means of preparation for my career field:
An internship or co-op is essential in today's business field. Changes in
technology and standard business practices occur daily and exposure to the
actual work environment is important. I encourage more focus on supply chain
management, finance (not just 301), negotiations, and management. Network at
every career services event as well as with other professors.
My career path in getting to this position:
Co-op junior year with International Paper in the International Distribution
dept. of corporate logistics. Gained exposure in all aspects of ocean freight
and using the bidding process to secure transportation services.
Other advice for students interested in gaining entry into and pursuing a career
in this field:
Be ready to begin a continued education program such as pursuing the CPM
(Certified Purchasing Manager), negotiations ( I highly recommend Karass ), and
finance.
