Present Job Title:
Wireless Data Product Manager
Brief description of my job responsibilities, e.g. a typical week in my job:
It is my job to ensure the sales success of advanced messaging services in the
Memphis, TN market. I do a lot of research for new products and services, I
check out what our competition is up to, I train the sales reps on new services
that we offer, I cold call with the sales reps, go on sales appointments with
them when they need help to close a deal, and I monitor everything that is going
on in each sales territory as far as prospective new sales and current accounts.
Suggestions I would give to undergraduate students with regard to courses,
internships, and other means of preparation for my career field:
If you are interested in going into sales, absolutely take a couple of sales
classes. It's very practical knowledge.
My career path in getting to this position:
I started with Arch right out of college as a "MASS". (Major Account
Sales Support) It was my job to make sure that our larger accounts were well
taken care of. I had to adjust any billing discrepancies, make sure that they
had the equipment that they needed, and try to grow the business that we had
with those customers. I was then promoted after about three months to an
"Account Executive" position. I was responsible for maintaining an
existing customer base as well as prospecting for new accounts. I did that for
about a year and a half, then I was promoted to a newly created position that I
am in now, which is basically a product/sales manager.
Other advice for students interested in gaining entry into and pursuing a career
in this field:
If you are looking to go into sales, you really have to be self motivated. There
is a lot of freedom in that area, and it's easy to goof off, but if you take it
seriously and work hard, you can make a lot of $$$$.
