Job Information
Employer Name:
Blue Ridge Family Magazine
Present Job Title:
Editor
Brief description of my job responsibilities, e.g. a typical week in my job:
As Editor, I am responsible for almost every aspect of the magazine. I write and edit articles, work with freelancers,
distributors, printers and graphic designers. The successful completion of the magazine rests on my shoulders.
Suggestions I would give to undergraduate students with regard to courses,
internships, and other means of preparation for my career field:
While it is certainly important to develop a wealth of knowledge in your chosen field, don't be afraid to branch out. You
may discover a hidden talent that will be beneficial to you down the road.
My career path in getting to this position:
I truly fell into my job as editor. I moved back to my hometown in Virginia with no job, so I was willing to do just about
anything for a paycheck. I answered an ad for an administrative position with a law firm. Turns out the owner of the firm
also owned a local magazine called Blue Ridge Family. When he found out my degree was in Communications, he told me I could
probably do some proofreading for Blue Ridge Family if I wanted, in addition to my law firm duties. Well, that turned into
writing articles, which turned into managing all the content for the publication, which then turned into becoming editor.
Other advice for students interested in gaining entry into and pursuing a career
in this field:
Never overlook an offer because you think you are "above" that position! Had I turned down the administrative job, I
would never have gotten all the great experience of managing an entire publication. You never know where that lowly temp
job or unpaid internship might get you!
