Present Job Title:
Executive Recruiter
Brief description of my job responsibilities, e.g. a typical week in my job:
Executive Recruiter for Senior Executives in High Technology and Software
Applications Companies. Positions primarily are Sr Sales executives, Business
Development, President and Senior General Management.
Suggestions I would give to undergraduate students with regard to courses,
internships, and other means of preparation for my career field:
Think outside the box; This may sound stupid or trite but I'm serious; For
example, I never would have thought of a career in executive search; I more or
less 'fell into it' and now I love it!!! And Never ever think you probably
can't do something!!! If you have an interest in it, go ahead and go for it!!!
Your image of what someone else does for a job is probably inaccurate, it is
probably easier than you think.
My career path in getting to this position:
I worked in the Counseling and Mental Health business for 9 years (My first job
was at Eastern State Psych Hospital, Now called Tennessee Mental Health
Institute or something like that; I then moved into finance, getting a job at
Fidelity Investments and then NASDAQ and finally 11 years ago I got into
Executive Search and I love it!!!
Other advice for students interested in gaining entry into and pursuing a career
in this field:
Sure I think that working in executive search can be extremely helpful for
anyone regardless of whether they stay in the field or not; it helps build
confidence; You have to be comfortable calling up very senior executives and
talking with them about what their company needs are; One young woman I worked
with during my first recruiting job said that she got a better education working
for 6 months as a recruiter than she ever did at 4 years of college.
