Present Job Title:
Project Manager
Brief description of my job responsibilities, e.g. a typical week in my job:
I manage education programs mainly at ORNL. I assist in recruiting applicants, assist the lab personnel in applicant
review, contact the selected applicants for appointment, help the participants in their entry to ORNL, serve as the contact
for any questions from mentors or participants, improve educational programs when necessary, and do it all over again.
Suggestions I would give to undergraduate students with regard to courses,
internships, and other means of preparation for my career field:
Get into an internship program so you can see the inner-workings. Talk to as many people as possible because most times
no two people do exactly the same thing at the same company. Network with people where you end up, because chances are
they know people that can help you down the road. Keep your options open. I am very far away from where my degrees say
I should be....
My career path in getting to this position:
Research in physics, public school education, working in the IT & Training Departments of a major corporation's
headquarters in Knoxville, and now as a project manager of education programs.
Other advice for students interested in gaining entry into and pursuing a career
in this field:
Jobs change over time, just be prepared to learn on the job. No salary position now a days is less than 45 hours a week if
you want a promotion. Talk to people and make the connections. Don't be afraid to drop the names but ask permission first.
