Present Job Title:
Applications Engineer
Brief description of my job responsibilities, e.g. a typical week in my job:
Every day I come in around 8:00 AM and browse through my emails. Then for the next 5 or so hours, I am dealing with customers that are having technical problems with either our hardware or software. Usually I have to actually dig into the software or hardware and play around with them to solve the issues. For the rest of the day, I am usually in training classes, working on various department projects, or possibly customer projects. The problems and projects I receive everyday are always different so it keeps life interesting. This is the typical daily schedule I go through every week.
Suggestions I would give to undergraduate students with regard to courses,
internships, and other means of preparation for my career field:
Computer Engineering provided me with the best of both the computer science and electrical engineering worlds. I definitely recommend taking a variety of courses. Internships or co-op opportunites are great to have in your background because they show you what the work force is actually like and you get to see what areas in your field are available.
My career path in getting to this position:
I followed the computer engineering curriculum very closely which did help me stay on track to the main goal of getting a degree in computer engineering. I took multiple computer science and electrically engineering courses which is definitely playing a large role in the position that I am in. The fundamentals that I learned there, I apply every single day. I also did pertake in internships which did help me determine what career goals and paths I wanted.
Other advice for students interested in gaining entry into and pursuing a career
in this field:
Definitely start preparing your resume early and start job searching in the fall. It seemed to me there were more opportunites in the fall than compared to the spring. Plus, if you have a job already lined up by the end of the fall semester, it does make life much easier during the spring semester. When comparing jobs, look at the total package and not just the salary. Things that I looked at were salary, environment, growth opportunites, city, and was the place fun to work at. I found that at National Instruments and are very happy. Hopefully these tips will help.
