Present Job Title:
Branch Manager
Brief description of my job responsibilities, e.g. a typical week in my job:
As Branch Manager for a worldwide electronics distribution company I am responsible for managing all aspects of the Huntsville, Alabama sales office. Pioneer is an electronics distributor for manufacturers such as Intel, National Semiconductor, Analog De
vices, Infineon, Atmel, Microchip, Zilof, Philips Semiconductors and many more. I manage a sales force consisting of Inside Sales Reps, Outside Sales Reps, Field Application Engineers (FAEs), and Product Marketing Mgrs. I began my career in this industr
y as an Outside Sales Rep. As electronic technology becomes more complex each year, Pioneer recruits more technical personnel for Outside Sales Reps and Field Application Engineers (and EE's are a perfect fit for both positions). Our FAE positions are f
or the EE who is proficient in electronic design and possess presentation skills. FAE's enjoy the variety of working with many different customer designs from PC motherboards, to industrila control, to consumer electronics. Although an EE is not required
for our Outside Sales representatives, the EE who has a high level of technical knowledge (not as deep as a design engineer)and has outstanding people skills will excel as an outside sales representative. These 2 positions are the career path for my pos
ition as Branch Manager. As a Branch manager I am responsible for interfacing with our suppliers and customers and ensuring that the day-to-day business of customer support is progressing to meet the company financial objectives (including Profit & loss
analysis, personnel management, and sales support).
Suggestions I would give to undergraduate students with regard to courses,
internships, and other means of preparation for my career field:
In addition to the technical courses in electronics, students should involve themselves in courses and activiies that will foster their people skills and their understanding of sales and business. I highly recommend taking business managment, accounting,
and finance courses to supplement the engineering curriculm.
My career path in getting to this position:
I began my career as a system engineer for a government contractor which included a substantial amount of presentation skills. I then changes careers to an outside sales represenative. New graduates can start as outside sales represenattives.
