Suggestions I would give to undergraduate students with regard to courses, internships, and other means of preparation for my career field:
Internship and / or Co-operative engineering program can provide you with the experience needed to give you an
advantage over other applicants seeking the same positions. It can also provide you with the skills necessary to evaluate
multiple job offers. Combining the knowledge gained from industry work -- co-operative engineering programs or internships -- with the classroom education can have a synergistic effect on your education. Some important classes to consider in addition to the required classes are:

statistics
presentation skills
public speaking
design of experiments (factorial analysis)
foreign languages
exposure to a wide Varity of analytical equipment

My career path in getting to this position:
10 years USAF maintaining and operating microwave, HF, SHF, UHF radio equipment
Earned BS in Material Science and Engineering form UTK
Obtain present job at Metzeler

Other advice for students interested in gaining entry into and pursuing a career in this field:
Communication skills are of the utmost importance. get as much practice as you can. practice interview skills and public speaking as well as presentation skills. You may be required to present technical reports to small (5-10) groups of people.
