Present Job Title:
Chief Archvist
Brief description of my job responsibilities, e.g. a typical week in my job:
I supervised 12 professionals and paraprofessions engaged in the tasks associated with running an archives. We make
available for research the materials generated by the White House during the Carter administration. These materials include
manuscripts, photographs, audiotapes, and videotapes.
Suggestions I would give to undergraduate students with regard to courses,
internships, and other means of preparation for my career field:
The best combination of degrees for an entry level position as an archivist is still a master's in history and a master's in
library science. In library school, one should concentrate on courses in information technology. In the future, archivists
will manage more electronic records than paper. Most library schools offer intern programs. These programs are very
important in gaining hands-on experience and building a resume.
My career path in getting to this position:
While in both graduate degree programs, I interned in the university archives. I was able to network in these internships
and my first job was on a grant project in one of these university archives. With these experiences, I found it easy to get
an entry level position as an archivist.
Other advice for students interested in gaining entry into and pursuing a career
in this field:
Join the Society of American Archivists. Student memberships are cheap and offer a way to meet archivists and network.
The Society offers a placement service that really works.
