Job Information
Employer Name:
Lexington Medical Center
Present Job Title:
Central Processing Supervisor for Lab
Brief description of my job responsibilities, e.g. a typical week in my job:
I am responsible for the daily
operations of the central processing area in a hospital laboratory. I also still work a few days a month in the chemistry
department performing analyses on blood, urine and body fluids.
Suggestions I would give to undergraduate students with regard to courses,
internships, and other means of preparation for my career field:
You really must have a degree in medical
technology to work in a clinical laboratory.
My career path in getting to this position:
I have worked as a medical technologist in several different
laboratory settings. Large hospital(1000 bed), small hospitals(50 beds),private reference lab.
Other advice for students interested in gaining entry into and pursuing a career
in this field:
It's a good skill to have. There are always jobs out there. It's not a very high paying or
prestigious job but I find it very fulfilling. There is very little patient contact but enough that you are reminded of why
your job is necessary and important. Less people are going into this line of work, less schools are offering degrees in
medical technology but with the aging population there will be a huge demand for this skill in the future as well as the
present. If you have any questions, please e-mail me and I'll try my best to answer them.
