Job Information
Employer Name:
The University of Tennessee - Agricultural Extension Service

Present Job Title:
Extension Assistant Agent

Brief description of my job responsibilities, e.g. a typical week in my job:
50% of my time is spent teaching Nutrition Education to the low income of Jefferson County - TNCEP is the Tennessee Nutrition Consumer Education Program. This is a program in nutrition to educate those on Food Stamps to have healthier life style choices and to extend the use of the food stamps and improve their life skills to get off of the program. The other 50% of my time is to teach 4-H to children in 9 schools in Jefferson County from 4th to 12th grades. They also are taught life skills to survive and how to grow up with character and to get a job and be responsible children, youth and adults.

Suggestions I would give to undergraduate students with regard to courses, internships, and other means of preparation for my career field:
Volunteer to work in the health field with a nutritionist at the Public Health Department, in industry with a food technologist, in the hospital with food service or a clinical dietitian or with the Extension Service.

My career path in getting to this position:
I have worked with Stokley-Van Camp, Inc. as a food technologist, an Extension Agent, a clinical dietitian, and a nutritionist in the Public Health Department.

Other advice for students interested in gaining entry into and pursuing a career in this field:
Volunteer to teach, speak in front of groups and take classes to become an EXCELLENT presenter. Working with all ages, races, and people from all economic situations will make for a well rounded educator. Volunteer to work with civic and church groups to make connections and to learn about institutions.
