Brief description of my job responsibilities, e.g. a typical week in my job:
Accompany the owner on buying trips as an assistant. Responsibilities include
the actual buying of merchandise for the store, managing the employees in the
store, accounts payable and receivable.
My career path in getting to this position:
I had interned with this store for the two previous summers before graduating.
Though it is not related to my major, it is in an area that enables me to make
contacts related to my major.
Other advice for students interested in gaining entry into and pursuing a career
in this field:
The retail industry is experiencing a difficult change. Sales are down and are
forcasted to continue declining. My advice is if you are hired for a position
as an assistant buyer, make it your business to learn every aspect of the
company that you can before you begin your career. It is important to know the
buying history of a company and the direction it has been trending towards.
