Present Job Title:
Benefits Assistant
Brief description of my job responsibilities, e.g. a typical week in my job:
I help with enrollments, answer inquiries by employees, assist the director of Benefits,
perform basic administration
Suggestions I would give to undergraduate students with regard to courses,
internships, and other means of preparation for my career field:
Try to figure out what you want to do early and take specific course and do internships
that are related.
My career path in getting to this position:
I registered at several temporary/employment agencies in the Atlanta area. During my last temporary
assignment, a position opened up in the same department. I applied for it, and eventually got it.
Other advice for students interested in gaining entry into and pursuing a career
in this field:
By working in Human Resources, I see that employers look at experience more than education. Also,
it looks really good to companies if you hold a job while in college. I have also seen how one job
posting can get 200+ responses, so it's good to follow-up after submitting a resume. Usually, a recruiter
only looks at a resume for a second. Also, one of the best ways to get your foot in the door is to
register at an employment agency. Even if it is just a temporary job, it can turn into a permanent
one, like in my case. If a position opens up, since they already know you and how you work, you have a
pretty good chance.
