Present Job Title:
Customer Relations Specialist
Brief description of my job responsibilities, e.g. a
typical week in my job:
The central point of
contact for customers after install. Develop positive relationships with
customers, identify and resolve problems. Work closely with Account Manager to
generate up-sell revenue. A typical day would be calling and visiting customers.
Taking customer calls and assisting them with Customer Care. Following up on
challenges with accounts and making sure they are resolved.
Suggestions I would give to undergraduate students with
regard to courses, internships, and other means of preparation for my career
field:
Use the University's Career Services
program. It is one of the best and will help in improving your resume and
interview skills. Talk with your professors about your interests and career
objectives, they may have contacts or advise that is helpful to meeting your
goals.
My career path in getting to this position:
When I graduated from UT I started working for an ISP
company, ACCESS of Tennessee. I was there for a couple of months and I had the
opportunity to interview with NewSouth Communications. I started working in
Sales Support/Customer Project Specialist (CPS) at NewSouth in November of 1999.
This position processed orders and worked closely with the Account Executives.
Then, in August of 2000, I was promoted to the Team Lead position for CPS with
the Knoxville, Nashville, Memphis, and Louisville, KY CPS as my team. I
participated as the CPS Team Lead in the C.O.D. Pilot Team at our coorporate
office in Greenville, SC from 10/23 to 12/8. I was promoted to Customer
Relations Specialist 12/11.
Other advice for students interested in gaining entry
into and pursuing a career in this field:
Research! Telecommunications is a great industry to be in, but you
have to make sure you research the companies. Presently, there is a high amount
of turn-over and the industry is struggling. NewSouth is a successful company in
this industry, but you have to be careful when you make the decision to enter
telecommunications. Research, Research!
