The Public Service Careers Program

See SERVICES link
Public Service can be defined as service in the interest of others, and encompasses all three sectors: government, nonprofit, and business, depending on one's particular role. The Public Service Career Program promotes the concept that public service is a socially responsible activity, as well as an attitude. We want to help you learn more about public and community service careers, whether short of long term, and facilitate your efforts to develop effective job search strategies.

  • The University of Tennessee's 11th Annual Campus-wide Fall Job Fair will be held at the Thompson-Boling Arena on Tuesday, September 16, 2008 from 10:00 am - 3:00 pm. This is your chance for you to meet informally with employers from all industries including Government and Nonprofit. This is a great opportunity to find the excellent career opportunities, as well as internships, co-ops, and summer jobs and volunteer work. While this is a joint fair, the government and nonprofit employers will have a designated section where you will find their booths. You may log into your Hire-A-Vol account where you will be able to see who will be at the fair, the types of positions available, the majors/degree levels they are seeking, etc. The system will also allow you to RSVP and submit your resume to employers of interest before the fair. If you have any questions regarding the Job Fair or Public Service program you may contact Shawna Hembree, Public Service Careers Consultant.

Career Counseling
The Public Service Career Program Counselor works with undergraduate, graduate, and law students in clarifying values, interests, and skills, exploring career options and long term plans, as well as developing effective job search strategies and preparing for the job search.

NOTE:
It may be useful for students to take the Strong Interest Inventory and/or Myers-Briggs Type Indicator evaluations prior to scheduling an appointment to discuss choice of majors and careers options. The Strong Interest Inventory (SII) ® is available online and takes about 30 minutes to complete. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) ® is a pencil and paper personality inventory that takes about 30 minutes to complete. The (SII) ® is very compatible with the (MBTI) ® in showing how your interests and personality preferences fit into different work environments. See our Career Counseling and Assessments page, then call 974-5435 to learn more.
