Recommended Time Line for Business Majors
"Preparing for Your Future"

Freshman Year: (between 0-29 credit hours)


  • Demonstrate excellent academic performance
  • Complete most of your general education courses (see business curriculum for more information)
  • Discover UT resources, including Career Services, Student Counseling Center, Business Advising office (52 Glocker), Tutorial Services, Center for Leadership Development
  • Make an appointment with your business advisor if you are a pre-business major.
  • Complete BA 101
  • Explore the various business majors at Career Services
      o Browse the Career Resource Center
      o Explore the web page
      o Talk with a career counselor
  • Get involved in campus co-curricular activities
      o Business clubs and organizations
      o Leadership opportunities
      o Volunteer work
  • Begin considering Study-Abroad options

Sophomore Year: (between 30-59 credit hours)

  • Schedule a meeting with your business pre-major advisor early in both semesters
  • Declare a business pre-major
  • Enroll in pre-business core classes
  • Complete BA 201
  • Set up informational interviews with professors and professionals in the career fields you are considering
  • Attend the Fall Job Fair and Spring Career Expo
  • Attend Business Career Information Day (Fall & Spring)
  • Get to know a faculty member in your area of interest. Establish a relationship with him/her for future recommendations
  • Develop your professional resume
  • Register with Career Services
  • Start developing a network of contacts
  • Apply for admission into the College of Business Administration
      o You must have earned at least a 2.75 for admission (3.00 for Accounting majors)
      o You must not have earned more than 75 credit hours
      o You must be a declared business pre-major
  • Continue pursuing co-curricular activities
  • Consider running for an office in a business club or organization
  • Focus on obtaining a summer position related to your field of interest
  • Apply for Study Abroad options Junior Year (between 60-89 credit hours)
  • Declare your business major and collateral
  • Meet with your business advisor each semester
  • Set up a meeting with your business faculty mentor
  • Obtain relevant work experience in your field through part-time employment, internships, practicum, field work, or volunteer experiences
  • Chose electives to enhance your qualifications, such as communication courses, leadership courses, and computer skills training
  • Research companies of interest
  • Meet with career advisor to review various areas within business
  • Begin applying in the FALL for summer or spring internships
  • Update resume in Career Services database
  • Attend any employer information sessions, workshops, or luncheons to increase networks
  • Obtain leadership positions in co-curricular activities
  • Develop a strategic goal plan for your job search/career plan
  • Practice interviewing with a mock interview at Career Services
  • Attend Fall Job Fair and Spring Career Expo Senior Year (90 or more credit hours)
  • Meet with your business advisor each semester
  • Begin participating in on-campus interviewing and resume referral through Career Services
