Freshmen and sophomores. Juniors may take the course with the permission of the instructor. This course is not open to seniors.

Purpose of the Course:
"Exploring Majors and Careers" is designed to help students learn about themselves and to teach students how to investigate potentially satisfying career options. The career exploration process is a lifelong journey. Therefore, students will not leave this course with a final answer to the question, "What will I do after college?” However, students will leave the course with resources for the journey. Additionally, this course does not survey various majors or careers, but teaches students the skills to research countless career fields.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify interests, skills, values, and personality; evaluate the impact these factors have on career and educational decision-making.
  • Become familiar with the various majors and colleges available at The University of Tennessee.
  • Learn basic search skills and strategies related to finding internships, part-time jobs, volunteer opportunities, or other career relevant experience(s).
  • Learn to locate and utilize academic and career informational resources (i.e., websites and Career Resource Center materials).
  • Develop decision-making skills and the ability to plan for and reach self-determined goals.

  • HAVE A POSITIVE ATTITUDE! This includes respect for fellow students, Career Services staff, guest speakers, and the instructor. Respect includes arriving on time (i.e., not interrupting with a late arrival), staying for the entire class, participating and actively listening, and ABSOLUTELY NO CELL PHONES OR PAGERS!
  • You will be treated as a colleague in a professional setting. Your attitude, investment in the course and all related activities, treatment of fellow students, guest speakers, and Career Services staff, and your work performance should reflect the level of professionalism expected in a work setting. Professionalism includes respectful interactions, investment in the task being addressed, and courteous attendance to any difficulty or concern.
  • Assignments and in class activities should be completed thoroughly, professionally, and thoughtfully.
  • In order to experience and enjoy the benefits from this course, you will need to invest time, effort, and attention!
