Company Research

Company research is necessary in identifying desirable interviews, preparing for an interview or employer visit, or deciding whether an opportunity offered should be accepted.

While online research is helpful, keep in mind that the business reference section of Hodges library, personal contacts, news publications, and other sources of information should also be used.

• D&B Million Dallar Database
  D&B's North American Million Dollar Database provides the information professional, marketer and sales executive with information on approximately 1,600,000 U.S. and Canadian leading public and private businesses. Company information includes industry information with up to 24 individual 8-digit SICs, size criteria (employees and annual sales), type of ownership, principal executives and biographies.
• Hoover's Online
  Hoover’s is a one-stop reference for business information. Search the database for information on companies, industries, and executives.
• Knoxville Area Chamber
  This Chamber of Commerce website is useful when searching for information on local companies. It also links to other Chamber of Commerce websites that can provide company information in other regions and cities.
• Subject Guides
  UT Hodges Library provides an A-Z discipline-specific guide of resources and well as information about who to contact at UT for additional assistance.
• Wet Feet
  The WetFeet Network provides information on companies, careers, and industries that job seekers use throughout their careers to make smarter career decisions. WetFeet also offers job seekers expert advice, newsletters, salary benchmarking tools, and discussion boards on everything from negotiating a raise to writing better cover letters.
