In respecting COVID-19 and directives from the University of Tennessee administration, Smokey’s Closet is open for scheduled appointments only.

Smokey’s Closet provides free, gently used professional clothing and accessories to students at UT. Students check-in and can receive one free outfit.



When is Smokey’s Closet open? Smokey’s Closet is open by Appointment Only on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons and Fridays. To schedule a time send an email to with your availability. Taking appointments now.

How much do the outfits cost? Nothing! The clothing is donated by the Knoxville and campus community so students can have professional clothing.

Where is Smokey’s Closet? Location will be provided after appointment is scheduled.

What if I’m a grad student? You’re still a student! Any student is welcome at Smokey’s Closet.

What if I don’t want other students to know I shop there? Smokey’s Closet is staffed by professionals and the individual appointments are arranged with a Smokey’s Closet committee member. We definitely want you to feel comfortable.

Where can I donate clothing? With our students’ safety at the forefront during COVID-19, at this time we are unable to accept donations.

Who runs Smokey’s Closet? Smokey’s Closet is a partnership between Student Government Association, the Center for Career Development & Academic Exploration and the UT National Retail Student Federation Association. An SGA committee recruits volunteers to assist throughout the year. We also have partnered with the Student Disability Services office, Experience Learning, Center for Leadership and Service, the Leadership Studies Minor, and the Knoxville Alumni Chapter.

J.C. Penney

UT is proud to have a partnership with J.C. Penney to provide students professional clothing at deep discounts! On a designated “Suit Up” time, J.C. Penney will open its store exclusively to UT students, faculty, staff, and alumni and will give a 30% coupon to be used on select professional brands! The spring event will be held online!


When is the Suit Up event? The next Suit Up event will be scheduled sometime in the early Spring semester. Check back for dates!

What time is the event? The event will be held online. You may order online any time during the event dates.

How do I get there? Convenient for everyone as it will be online!

Is the discount on everything? The discount applies to professional brands designated by J.C. Penney. The discount does apply to existing discounts!
