What are VOLTreks?

VOLTreks provide an opportunity to learn about career possibilities by traveling

to organizations and exploring various industries and careers. A small group of students will have the chance to engage with professionals, tour the facility, and gain insight into the industry. Site visits will typically last for 2-4 hours.

VOLTrek: Exploring Careers in College Athletics

Are you interested in a career in College Athletics?  This VolTrek is designed for students with an interest in exploring careers within a University Athletics Department.   Different career pathways include Strength and Conditioning, Fundraising (The Tennessee Fund), VFL Films, Student Athlete Development, and Graphic Design, Photography, and Social Media (151 Creative).  The VolTrek will include a tour of the University of Tennessee Athletics Department, a discussion with a variety of Athletics professionals, and a Q&A session for you to learn more.  Come out to learn about the different career paths within College Athletics!  Students must register for this event on Handshake.

Are you interested in a career at a University Library?  This VolTrek is designed for students with an interest in exploring careers within the University Library System.  Different career pathways include Instruction and Subject Specialist Librarians, Special Collections and Archives, Technical Services, Community Outreach, and Administration.  The VolTrek will include a tour of Hodges Library, a discussion with a variety of Library professionals, and a Q&A session for you to learn more.  Come out to learn about the different career paths within the University Library System.  Students must register for this event on Handshake.

Are you interested in a career in Information Technology?  This VolTrek is designed for students with an interest in exploring careers within Information Technology.  Different career pathways include Telephone, Network, and Engineering Services, Instructional Support and Training, Research Computing Support, Information Management and Analytics, and Linux and Windows Support.  The VolTrek will include a tour of the Office of Information Technology at the University of Tennessee, a discussion with a variety of Information Technology professionals, and a Q&A session for you to learn more.  Come out to learn about the different career paths within Information Technology.  Students must register for this event on Handshake.

Are you interested in a career working at a museum?  This VolTrek is designed for students with an interest in exploring careers working at a museum.  Different career pathways include Development, Collections Management, and Exhibit Curators.  The VolTrek will include a tour of the McClung Museum of Natural History and Culture, a discussion with a variety of museum professionals, and a Q&A session for you to learn more.  Come out to learn about the different career paths within the museum field.  Students must register for this event on Handshake.

Haslam College of Business VOLTrek

This VOLTrek is a partnership between the Center for Career Development & Academic Exploration and the Haslam College of Business. Over the course of several days, students will visit with employers in various business and industry functions, including American Express. Students will also visit the NYSE and meet with local UT alumni in the Big Apple.


 

March 21-22, 2019

Huntsville, AL 

Engineering VOLTrek 

This VOLTrek will focus on engineering employers and careers. Over the course of two days, students will visit with several different engineering employers, including Booz Allen Hamilton, Radiance Technologies, Science & Engineering Services, and Brockwell Technologies, among others. This Trek will also include a social and reception with the Northern Alabama UT Alumni Chapter!

 


September 21, 2018

Kimberly Clark 

This VOLTrek is targeted at first-year and sophomore supply chain majors, but is open to anyone in the Haslam College of Business who wants to learn more about the field of supply chain.

 


October 12th, 2018

East Tennessee Historical Society 

This Trek will focus on students interested in public history,

libraries, archives, museums, and related fields.

 

 


October 26th, 2018

Knoxville News Sentinel 

This Trek is open to all majors with an interest in journalism, media,

writing, advertising, sales, and production.

 

 


November 9th, 2018

Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation   

This Trek is open to all majors with an interest in the environment, parks, recreation, ecology/biology, geology, anthropology, and other related areas.

 


November 16th, 2018

Mahle 

This VOLTrek is targeted at students interested in or majoring in engineering.

 


Late February/Early March 2019

Oak Ridge National Lab    

This Trek is focused on science, engineering, technology, math, and scientific communications/technical writing.

 


April  2019

Youth Villages

This Trek will focus on careers in social services and mental health.
